Three Pedals and a Prayer: In Defense of the Manual Gearbox
By The Supercar Sisters · May 22, 2026

Let us be clear about something up front: a modern dual-clutch transmission will beat you, the manual purist, in every measurable way. It shifts faster than your nervous system can process. It never misses a gear. It does not care about your feelings.
And that, precisely, is the problem.
Efficiency Is Not the Same as Joy
Somewhere along the way, the industry decided that faster meant better, and the gated manual — that gorgeous chrome chessboard — quietly vanished from the options list. Progress! Also: tragedy.
Because the manual gearbox was never about lap times. It was about involvement. The satisfying mechanical snick of a well-oiled shift gate. The heel-and-toe downshift you nailed perfectly with nobody around to witness it. The car asking something of you, and you rising to meet it.
A paddle-shift exotic is a brilliant conversation. A manual is a relationship. Occasionally a frustrating one. That’s rather the point.
The Investment Footnote (Because You Were Thinking It)
For the pragmatists in the back pretending they don’t care: the market has already decided. Gated-manual examples of cars that also came as automatics now command serious, sometimes absurd premiums. Collectors aren’t paying for performance. They’re paying for the experience that is no longer being manufactured.
- The third pedal is, increasingly, a finite resource. They are not making more.
- A clean manual is one of the few “options” that reliably appreciates rather than depreciates.
- Yes, it will be slightly slower at the track day. You will be having slightly more fun. We consider this an excellent trade.
A Gentle Warning
Driving a manual exotic in modern traffic is a commitment. Hill starts will test your composure. Your left leg will develop opinions. And one day, in front of a valet line full of people, you will stall it — and you will simply have to wear it with dignity, like a true enthusiast.
If that sounds like a nuisance, the dual-clutch is waiting and it’s magnificent. But if it sounds like character — welcome home. We rather like helping people find the cars that make them feel something. Even if that something is occasionally mild public embarrassment.
